St. Patrick’s Day is a patron saint day like no other, capturing the imaginations of people around the world as parties and festivals mark the event.

Celebrated annually on March 17th, the day marks the death of Ireland’s foremost patron saint, Saint Patrick, who lived from 385 – 461 AD. St. Patrick’s Day was made an official Christian feast day in the 17th century, when the earliest known festivities and parades took place in North America, before spreading to Ireland in the 20th century.

As part of the celebrations for this notable day in the calendar, many people enjoy a glass or two of their favorite Irish or Ireland-associated drink. If this applies to you, here are a few options you may want to consider sipping while you say Sláinte this St. Patrick’s Day.

The drink: Stout

Thanks largely to the global popularity of Guinness, stout is understandably the first beer to pop into many people’s heads when they think of drinks relating to St. Patrick’s Day. Ireland is well known for its stouts, which developed as an offshoot of English porter. Porter was exported to Ireland in large quantities during the 1700s, resulting in Irish brewers producing their own porter that same century. By the 1800s the style of brewing dry stout with rich roasted, coffee qualities had been established, distinguishing dry stout from the porter beer from which it developed. Various stouts are now made all over Ireland, and landmarks like the Guinness Factory in Dublin are a much-visited tourist attraction year-round, creating an enduring connection between Ireland and this particular beer style.

The glass: Spiegelau Stout Beer Glass

For this type of beer, there is only one option - the Spiegelau Stout Beer Glass from our Craft Beer Collection. Released in 2014, the Spiegelau Stout Beer Glass accentuates the roasted malt, rich coffee and chocolate notes that define the Stout beer style. The Spiegelau Stout Beer Glass didn’t come about by accident either; the crafting of this specialist stout glass saw Spiegelau Collaborate with leading stout brewers Left Hand Brewing and Rogue Ales to ensure we had the best in the business on board to review each prototype we tested out.

The drink: Irish Whiskey

Scotch and Bourbon may be the best-known whiskey styles today, but Irish Whiskey is the only spirit option for any St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Irish Whiskey has a rich history, with whiskey-making thought to have started in Ireland around one-thousand years ago. By the 1800s, Irish Whiskey was the most popular spirit in the world! A long decline saw the number of distilleries in Ireland reduce considerably, but Irish Whiskey has enjoyed a resurgence in the 21st century, making it an accessible drink for anyone looking to enjoy a quality Irish spirit.

The glass: Spiegelau Whisky Snifter

You can enjoy Irish Whiskey in numerous ways, but it is mostly commonly enjoyed either neat or with a little water. For this, we recommend using our Spiegelau Whisky Snifter. Every element of this glass is designed to allow the user to enjoy their whiskey at its best. Its narrow opening traps and concentrates the whiskey’s aromas, allowing for a rich nosing experience. This richness of aromas is added to by the glass’s bulbous body, which exposes an increased surface area of whiskey to aeration, allowing it to breathe and develop. We even elongated the glass stem slightly compared to your usual snifter glass, giving you the option of warming your whisky in your hand or holding your drink by the stem to prevent unwanted warming.

If you prefer your Irish Whiskey on the rocks or as part of a cocktail, we suggest you try out our Spiegelau Perfect Serve Double Old Fashioned glass. This glass’s impressive width makes it perfect for housing ice cubes along with your whiskey, while its 370ml capacity makes it equally ideal for anyone looking to throw in some mixers to proceedings.

The drink: Irish Coffee

If you’d like to enjoy a drink in a slightly different manner, an Irish Coffee might be just what you need to get yourself saying “top of the morning” to whomever you come across. Irish Coffee was created in 1943 at Foynes Port near Limerick, Ireland and has grown into one of the most popular alcoholic caffeinated beverages in the world.

To make Irish Coffee, you’ll need Irish Whiskey, hot coffee, brown sugar, and some double cream. Pour around 200ml of hot coffee into your coffee glass before adding 50ml Irish Whiskey and 1 tsp brown sugar and stirring until the sugar has fully dissolved. To finish, lightly whip around 2 tbsp double cream until it thickens slightly, then slowly pour it over a spoon so that the double cream floats on top of your coffee. You may also wish to top off your Irish Coffee with some grated nutmeg or cocoa.

The glass: Spiegelau Perfect Serve Macchiato Glass

We consider it a waste to make such a good-looking drink only to hide it behind an opaque mug or cup. To fully enjoy Irish Coffee’s visual appeal after you have floated the cream elegantly on top of the coffee, drink it from the Perfect Serve Collection. With a 300ml capacity, it’s the perfect hot beverage glass for anyone wanting to marvel at their liqueur coffee creations on St Patrick’s Day or any other day.

So there you have it – three sumptuous suggestions that will help ensure you have no trouble deciding on your tipple for St Patrick’s Day.
